    In the Family Bible is a parchment - an affidavit from Samuel stating that he is not in receipt of any local or military allowance other than his Chelsea pension, thus meaning I think that he had applied to the Parish of Appleby for residence and possibly poor relief, as he had only the one hand - email from Stuart Perkins dated 18/01/12

    SAMUEL CHATTERLEY CAME BEFORE ME ONE OF HIS MAJESTIES JUSTICES OF THE PEACE FOR THE COUNTY OF WESTMORELAND AND MADE OATH THAT HE WAS ADMITTED AN OUT PENSIONER OF HIS MAJESTIES ROYAL HOSPITAL AT CHELSEA ON THE 3RD DAY OF FEBr 1801 FROM THE 35TH REGIMENT OF FOOT COMMANDED BY GENL FLETCHER WAS THEN AGED ABOUT 26YEARS; SERVED IN THE ARMY 5 1/4 YEARS, AND WAS DISCHARGED IN CONSEQUENCE OF LOSING HIS LEFT HAND IN THE SERVICE IN HOLLAND AND THAT HE HIS NOT IN RECEIPT OF ANY OTHER MILITARY OR LOCAL ALLOWANCE OR PENSION FROM THE PUBLIC BESIDES THE PENSION HE RECEIVES FROM THE SAID HOSPITAL AT 9d PER DAY, AND NOW LIVES IN THE PARISH OF ST LAWRENCES IN THE MARKET TOWN OF APPLEBY IN THE COUNTY OF WESTMORELAND

    Samuel's signature on his marriage certificate bears a strong resemblance to the writing in the family bible.
