| 62860 | From Durham Mining Museum website Robert Lawson, 22, died in Durham County Hospital in 24th January from injuries received the previous day. At the inquest Anthony Blenkin, deputy, said he had fired two shots for Lawson in the Busty seam, Tudhoe Colliery. Later, he set some timber for him and the deceased complained of an injury to his insides caused by shoving a piece of coal from the face toward the canch ; the working height was only 14 inches. Lawson told his father, Matthew, checkweighman at the pit, that he had "raxed" himself internally when lifting ramble. A verdict of death 'due to acute appendicitis with perforation, possibly accelerated by strain' was recorded. Source: Text kindly provided by Jim Grainger from his research into early newspapers (primarily the Durham Advertiser and Durham Chronicle). | LAWSON, Robert (I13242)
