John and his brother Joseph both died in the West Stanley Pit Explosion. John died of dioxide poisoning and burns in the Brockwell Seam, aged 18 years. Inscription reads:- In loving memory of Joseph aged 23 & John aged 18 Dearly beloved sons of Joseph & Barbara Carter who lost their lives in the West Stanley Pit explosion 16th Feb 1909 also Mary Ann dau of the above & beloved wife of Edward Carney who died 5th Jun 1916 aged 24 also the above Barbara Carter who died 2nd Jan 1928 aged 64 also the above Joseph Carter who dield 15th Jan 1929 aged 75
